Sustainable Design is a word thrown about freely. We read with glee about this new company Delos taking health and sustainable living to a new level.

Consulting with the top institutions for health and wellness across the world, namely the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo Clinic, Columbia Medical School, the Delos Living approach marries science technology to architecture.

Unlike most eco-conscious construction companies offering LED lighting or incorporating recycled materials, the Delos approach takes green living to a deeper health level whilst still maintaining sharp eco interior design.

We were thrilled to stumble across this Thoroughly Green article by Fabrice Knoll, co-founder, DFKnoll, Paris, explaining his take on what it means to be truly sustainable. His views coincide with ours on balancing the entire story behind the product: the lifespan, the end waste, the maintenance, the logistics as well as the material

Ever since he started working as an architect he has approached “green” sourcing the same way he would for a conventional project.

"After you’ve selected a product that meets your specifications, give it a background check. Ask the pre-selected suppliers where the product is made and assembled, where the primary materials to manufacture it are coming from, how everything is transported, what is done with the waste, etc."

He also notes the importance of having the correct contractors fit sustainable products with the right glues and finishing. We quite agree.

"In the end, sustainability is a holistic process. Green is not just a matter of the final product or material being green, but it is a continuous state-of-mind in the whole process of transporting, manufacturing, treating employees, and at the end of the chain, respecting the client. It all goes together. And, as you respect your product, your employees, and your clients, you have then the satisfaction of being able to respect yourself."

This 'respect' follows right through to the workers who manufacture the product which is why ethical sourcing is so important.

The Shore Hotel- Sustainable Luxury Boutique Hotel in Santa Monica

Close to the Santa Monica pier on Ocean Avenue, the Shore Hotel Santa Monica is the newest luxury boutique hotel in the city.  The Silver LEED-registered Santa Monica environmentally friendly hotel takes a revolutionary approach to sustainability.

The hotel worked with a LEED consultant to ensure that every aspect of the hotel was designed to reduce the consumption of natural resources, from the building design itself to its day-to-day operation. As much as possible, the hotel relies on locally procured recycled and recyclable materials, many salvaged from the building's demolished preexisting site for use in the new build. Every aspect of the hotel was designed to reduce consumption of natural resources. If only all the other hotels would follow suit....

Eco-ticity Facts:

• 50% of construction waste was recycled or salvaged
• Wood sourced from sustainable forests
• 10% of all building materials are from within a 500 mile radius of the project
• Low-flow water fixtures that significantly reduce water consumption
• Native landscaping that reduces the extent of required irrigation
• Sophisticated building controls system that monitors and adjusts energy usage
• Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) materials
• Maximized access to natural daylight
